A Family Medicine physician is

  • A specialist who is a primary health care provider with competencies in providing holistic continuity of clinical care to patients of all ages, while emphasizing a preventive approach, wise resource management, and primary care research.

  • A specialist physician at the center of the health care system as a team leader and involved first with individual patients and then over time with families and communities.

  • Competent to provide, clinical care in all disciplines at the primary care level, including internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, musculoskeletal medicine, OB/GYN, as well as acute care such as emergency medicine.

  • Competent to provide and promote health at the community level and emphasize prevention services.

  • Competent in research relevant to primary health care.

  • Competent in resource management at primary health care level.

  • Competent to provide leadership and mentorship in primary health care.

Zambia’s first 4-year MMed post-graduate training program for Family Medicine was started in 2019 through a partnership with Seed Global Health.

Specialty training Program 

The Family Medicine Specialist Training Program (STP) is available through the Zambia College of Medicine and Surgery https://zacoms.com and provides a 3 year program in Family Medicine at designated government health facilities.

point of care ultrasound

Family Medicine has integrated a longitudinal point of care ultrasound (POCUS) training course into the curriculum and is taking the lead in developing POCUS training in Zambia in the clinical setting, in the classroom and online.
